Saturday Youth Ceramics at MECA, 2014 During the months of October-December, I taught a group of talented students between ages 6-17 at MECA through their Continuing Studies Program. I designed projects that created a strong foundation in hand building, dealing with surface design, as well as throwing on the wheel. Students learned how to build with slabs, exercised their measuring skills scratched and attached measured slab pieces to form various sizes of boxes. The boxes were to become wall sculptures, so students had to think about how to create a supportive back on the boxes for hanging. Next, students applied white slipped their boxes and used sgraffito to create original designs to each box. Students had to think about how each box was to relate to each other and look like they belonged together, like a family. They also got a lesson in color mixing, due to my limited budget, I bought underglaze in the 3 primary colors and let students mix them to create their desired color. Each student blew me away with how a brown clay box could be transformed into an experience; a story; a beautiful object that was made with enthusiasm and curiosity. Additionally, students excelled on the wheel and every student got to bring home a cup and bowl to their families!
