Ceramic "Bronze" Head
Students in Ceramics 2 explored the anatomy of the human face through figurative sculpture. After choosing their muse, students rolled and formed a newspaper armature that was secured with masking tape. Thick slabs were wrapped around the newspaper armature and placed on top of a disc of clay, which would become their sculpture's neck. Students added and subtracted clay to form the features of their character. One of the most exciting parts of this project was cutting open their character's head and removing the newspaper armature with pliers. The head was sealed up and ready for the finishing touches. After the bisque firing, students used oxidizing bronze paint with a patina aging solution over it to give it a weathered look.
