Political Plates
This assignment was designed to acquaint students with the properties, process and sophistication of clay and to incorporate design principles when creating a ceramic form. Students learned how Julie Green and Judy Chicago expressed their political views using plates in two different ways: Green's marriage of 2D subject matter on a 3D form and Chicago's raised central motifs. Students experimented with slump molds and the potter's wheel to create their plate, and chose either a 2D or 3D approach to communicate their political passion using slip, sgraffito, underglaze painting, sculpting/modeling and glazes.
